Gear Bag: Keith Warran

The List

KWGerber-2

This is the standard equipment in my backpack when I take to the field. Many of these items are basic needs, as I never know what I will run into when in the field.

– Orange hunting vest – to mark a downed animal so it is easier to find if I have to walk out in big country to get back to my horse or vehicle

– Hi Vis marking tape – used to mark trails to and from hunting sites as well as mark direction of blood trail so that it aids in tracking wounded animals

– Toilet paper – in case I ever need to do any “paperwork” while in the field

– Oil wipe – used to wipe down rifle to prevent corrosion

Therma Cell – effective insect repellent during warmer months

– Bottle of water – always a good idea to have plenty to drink or clean up with

– Cell phone – this is a multi tool as it serves as a phone, flashlight, GPS and a note pad

– Cleaning wipes – used to clean up after field dressing animals

Scent Killer – used to minimize human odor

– Rangefinder – I won’t go to the field without one

– Binoculars – almost as valuable as my rifle or bow itself

– Gerber Vital Series – with these knives, I can take care of any size animal I take down

Vital Series – The Details

When it comes to knives, I rely on two different options to get the job done quickly and effectively.

First is the Gerber Vital Skin & Gut Hook, with this tool I can quickly and easily skin everything from small to big game. The blade shape is perfect for skinning without worrying about cutting through the capes and the gut hook is wide enough to use on elk and even a moose.

Second is the Vital pocket folder, this little knife is worth it’s weight in gold and is perfect for any task needed as far as field dressing goes. The handle is comfortable, the overall size is compact, and the blades are incredibly sharp. Most importantly, this knife is without a doubt the safest I’ve ever used when it comes to changing out the replaceable blades. Let’s face it, the last thing any outdoorsman needs is a knife that is so difficult to change the blades that they fear cutting themselves in the process. With the Exchange-A-Blade feature, I can quickly and easily change blades and not worry about injuring myself.
